Women and alcohol
Women are more affected by alcohol than men. Sorry girls - but its true! Why? Three reasons women can't drink like men …
- Women are generally smaller than men, which leads to a greater alcohol concentration in the blood.
- Women have on average 10% more fat than men but alcohol cannot be dispersed in fat. This means alcohol travels in a more concentrated form in a woman's body and causes more harm.
- Women usually get drunk faster and the effects last longer.
Recommended maximum alcohol consumption for women:
- 2-3 units or less per day
- 14 units per week
- Not all in one go.
This is equivalent to 7 pints or 7 glasses of wine (at 175mls).
Persistent heavy drinking can lead to:
- Sexual and menstrual problems
- Can cause ovaries and breasts to shrink
- Loss of vaginal secretion
- Weight gain
- Miscarriage
- Fetal malformation if drinking during pregnancy
